In this content-rich world, we have the opportunity and obligation to communicate complex narratives using curated elements and visual shorthand; to infuse new meaning and point-of-view into the old; to capture something long and layered in an instant. In this unit, you will explore methods of making \u2014including compression, deconstruction, abstraction, and translation\u2014with the goal of telling a familiar story in a new way.<\/p>\n<h3>Assignment<\/h3>\n<p>By the end of today\u2019s class, pick a narrative (book, film, tv show, play, etc) that you know very well. Reduce it to three collections of core elements\u2014including (but not limited to) characters, places, events, themes, symbols, language, tropes, narrative arcs. Using the collections as content, visually represent the chosen narrative three times.<\/p>\n<p>The final format of each collection is up to you, but should respond to the content (eg a set of characters might be presented in a family tree) and should not be the same form as the original narrative (ie don\u2019t make a book about <em>The Catcher in the Rye<\/em>).<\/p>\n<h3>Considerations<\/h3>\n<p>\u2014How much can you reduce the narrative and still capture the spirit of the original text?<br \/>\n\u2014How can your point-of-view about the original be conveyed through your editing\/design decisions?<br \/>\n\u2014How could your narrative become information\/data?<br \/>\n\u2014How can your final output speak to audiences familiar and unfamiliar with the original?<\/p>\n<h3>Learning Objectives<\/h3>\n<p>\u2014Edit content down to the most important components<br \/>\n\u2014Embed a point-of-view into an existing piece of content<br \/>\n\u2014Communicate complexity by applying economy<br \/>\n\u2014Translate something old\/familiar into something new\/fresh<\/p>\n<h3>Extended Portion<\/h3>\n<p><em>Part 1: Extend, Develop, Refine<br \/>\n<\/em>Option A (One): Develop your favorite approach from the first week into an extended narrative.<br \/>\n<em>or<\/em><br \/>\nOption B (Many): Apply your favorite approach from the first week to a series (at least three) of additional narratives. <\/p>\n<p><em>Part 2: Present, Document, Share<br \/>\n<\/em>Title and document, and share your project with an audience (physically and online).   <\/p>\n<p>Timing \/Deliverables:<br \/>\n<em>Week 1 <\/em><br \/>\nOption A:<br \/>\n\u2014develop your approach into 3 distinct directions<br \/>\n\u2014thoughts on final format<\/p>\n<p>Option B:<br \/>\n\u2014full list of new narratives<br \/>\n\u2014design sketches for at least 3 (include at least 3 distinct design routes)<br \/>\n\u2014thoughts on final format<\/p>\n<p><em>Week 2<\/em><br \/>\n\u2014project refinements<br \/>\n\u2014format prototypes<br \/>\n\u2014plan for part 2<\/p>\n<p><em>Week 3<\/em><br \/>\n\u2014final <\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Question How\u00a0can\u00a0designers\u00a0distill\u00a0a narrative to\u00a0its\u00a0essence?
